My friends, today we made art. Mixed art. Transmedia art. Call it whatever but we took one of the oldest Romanian poems (Miorita – romanian for The Sheep – an allegory of life and death, crime and betrayal), mixed it with a little twitter API voodoo, added some cool and fresh design, social media sharing features and made it sparkle: I give you Myoritza 2.0.
The four characters in the Poem were given Twitter accounts and through a little programming magic we made sure they say their part just when they were supposed to.
It was really successful but stay tuned for this result. We had fun doing it, I know people had fun watching it.

There is a Romanian tradition called Martisor. It celebrates the coming of spring, rebirth and others. Men buy women little (usually hand made) jewels and flowers. You can read a little more about it here.
We got inspired about the red and white thread that accompanies this tradition. So we made a little widget people can post on their blogs and web pages. I use one on the blog too. Check it out in the right upper area. If you visit the minipage you can read the text saying “We wish you many new years. Tangle our thread around your website. It doesn’t have any magical properties, bringing you countless visitors to the website but it’s pretty good at showing what this celebration is about: new beginnings and fulfillment. All you have to do is copy the html code below in your template files.”
It was pretty fun doing it and it really caught up. Up to 400 websites, blogs and social media profiles adopted the virtual “Martisor”. In just 5 days we’ve served around 250 000 virtual “Martisoare”. And counting.

I have been studying the whole concept behind Zynga’s recent success (Farmville, Mafia Wars etc.) and I just can’t stop thinking about how interesting it is.
Basically all of the other online games used to draw users to a social infrastructure (user accounts, social networks etc.) build on their own. The great thing about Zynga is that it targets already built social infrastructures (like Facebook, the iPhone AppStore). It lowers costs and it increases exposure and potential revenue.
What if brands would use the social networks to market products just like Zynga markets their games?

My colleague, Andrei Gheorghe (@idevelop), got featured on CNN and The Telegraph with his latest social media experiment, The Longest Poem in the World.
The experiment gathers status updates from Twitter users, mixing them in a 347430 verses (so far) piece of art.
“I soon found that people were very excited to be part of this and consider it some form of artistic expression of the collective consciousness of Twitter.” declared Andrei for the Telegraph.
This is not the first time Andrei experimented with social media interaction. His Quizoo game was a hit when launched.
If you find the idea interesting, don’t forget to digg it.

Social media. As in 'people' media.
Although you know my opinion on statistic samples, a recent study on LinkShare stated that ads ran on social networks “are unlikely to be effective as direct marketing tools”.
Rich media banners seemed to be the most intrusive ones, “with almost two thirds (62%) viewing this tactic as an interference when browsing the web”.
59% stated promotions offered online are useful and , joy – joy, only 18% thought ads to be an intereference in their online browsing. My opinion is they’ve ignored them
.
Social media communication VS Advertising
It’s interesting for me to find advertisiers thinking of social media marketing as running ads on social networks.
I feel this media as a new way of brand – consumer interaction. I can’t stress enough the “interaction” part. It’s just not about shouting. It’s about interacting, being there, talking, chatting, joining the masses, not ordering them to consume.

*I don’t know if that’s what happened but it might be a lie. You can start one too at StartALie.com, a viral campaign started by Tappening.com. “If bottled water companies can lie, we can too” goes the copy and it seems like a nice way of using social media to spread some facts about tap water.
The website is clean and simple, with a big “twitter-esque” input at the top and the latest lies scrolling down. Users can spread the news about it on their favourite social network.

This week my colleague Andrei Gheorghe launched a pretty neat thingy using Twitter, a small website you might have heard of
Andrei thought of giving users something too do while not blabing around about their lives and proffesion: play.
“Quizoo is a highly interactive trivia game build on top of the Twitter API platform. It asks a question every few minutes and the first twitter user to reply @quizoo with the correct answer wins the round and the point. Daily rankings are available at www.idevelop.ro/quizoo. Plans for the near future are to include more complex quests and tasks that need to be accomplished in order to find the correct answer” said Andrei.
Where is Quizoo going? I don’t know. What I do know is agencies around the world have not yet tapped into Twitter communication.

I happened to stumble upon this great article by Amelia Torode on iMedia regarding the ways brands perceive the social web and where they usually fail.
You see – the social web is something that is way more basic than our corporate cultures and economic concepts we have developed over the years. It’s all free.
At least this is how the users see it. Brands don’t want it to be free. They want to use it. They want to benefit from it. And they can too…
But not in the classic way. They will fail trying to monetize it but chances are they will succeed if they will be focusing on earning something else: value. Brand value. By interacting and giving away freebies. Weather free is an article, research results, products or services.
